Posts Tagged ‘Goals’

ROW80LogocopyI’m finally back on track. Well, sort of. I’m not all the way there yet, but compared to the last few weeks, this week was FANTASTIC.

Main Goals

  1. Write or edit every day. 1/7 Only one day this week, but I wrote almost 2,000 words, finished up a chapter, and wrote a whole new short story. Yeah!
  2. Read every day. 2/7 Twice as good as last week!
  3. Exercise twice a week. 5/2 That’s right, I exercised FIVE TIMES this week. I was determined to at least hit this goal out of the park if I couldn’t do it with anything else.

Bonus Goals

  1. Rewrite chapter 1 of L1. Actually thought about it this week, but didn’t do anything with it. Yet.
  2. Keep writing W2. Yes, actually!
  3. Update my contests doc. Nope.

List of Awesome

  1. Latest Not Another Teen Wolf Podcast is out! (We talk about “Restraint” and “Raving” with a special guest who is also a listener of the show!)
  2. Latest Onceable is out! (We talk about “Manhattan” and “The Queen is Dead.”)
  3. I got my signed George Watsky CD, Cardboard Castles, in the mail this week! It’s pretty awesome. I actually did a review of it for Hypable, too!
  4. I also got my Firefly/Doctor Who mash-up shirt this week. It’s like Christmas in March!
  5. I have a friend that is diligently working on covers for my short story collection. And they’re all so beautiful I can’t decide which one I like best. I’m trying to finish up this set to get ready for self-publication soon. It might be a little while, as I want to add some more stories to it, but it WILL happen. Hurrah!

Have you guys hit any slumps this round? Have you been able to power through them yet? If so, how did you do it?

ROW80LogocopyClearly, this round was not meant to be full of productivity.

Main Goals

  1. Write or edit every day. 0/7 Nope
  2. Read every day. 1/7 One day! I read one day! Which, believe it or not, is exciting after not having touched this book in two weeks. Hoping against hope that I’ll be able to finish it soon.
  3. Exercise twice a week. 0/2 Nope.

Bonus Goals

  1. Rewrite chapter 1 of L1. Nope.
  2. Keep writing W2. Nope.
  3. Update my contests doc. Nope.

List of Awesome

  1. Things are slowly but surely coming together for SDCC. Hotels are very nearly finalized and plane tickets are set to be purchased soon. Yay!
  2. Check out the first episode of ReWatchable, where we prepare to start talking about some Firefly! Oh, and be sure to at least pop over and check out the first 30 seconds if nothing else. Wash may have a very special message for you. ;)
  3. The first episode of Book Hype is also out. This is great for avid readers and writers alike. We talk about the book The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken, along with some other book-related things about ourselves. The next episode is going to be an awesome one for writers to tune into, so I’ll probably be making a whole post about it when it goes live!
  4. It’s March, which means it’s one step closer to summer and one step farther away from all this GOD FORSAKEN SNOW.

Please, for the love of my sanity, share a  funny story, article, GIF, or picture with me!

ROW80LogocopyAs the title indicates, I got nothing done this week. Again.

But, unlike last week, I’m totally fine with that. I actually got a little bit of a break on Thursday and Friday (see List of Awesome), and spent the first part of the week preparing for that.

So, in my eyes, it was well worth not getting anything done. And I also feel like I’m at a point now where I can get back into my routine. Better late than never, right?

Main Goals

  1. Write or edit every day. 0/7 Nothing for this week, though I did manage to blog three times, which is a definite win in my book.
  2. Read every day. 0/7 I’ve been too busy and too tired to read recently, but I want to get through Beautiful Creatures and into something else and SOON.
  3. Exercise twice a week. 0/2 Too busy and too distracted, but I’m definitely looking to remedy this for this week.

Bonus Goals

  1. Rewrite chapter 1 of L1. Nope.
  2. Keep writing W2. Nope.
  3. Update my contests doc. Nope.

List of Awesome

  1. I went to Philly and met up with two of my Hypable co-workers (for the first time, no less) to see a pre-screening of The Host. We also went to a book signing by Stephenie Meyer, and the two main guys (Max Irons and Jake Abel) were there as well. It was a great experience, and the most fun I’ve had in a long time. I think I enjoyed just being with two of my fellow staffers more than the movie and the signing, ha!
  2. I got some pretty fantastic news while I was away, which made those two days infinitely better. You want to know what it is? Well, do ya? Okay. …I’M GOING TO SAN DIEGO COMIC CON AFTER ALL. With a little bit of finagling, Andrew (Hypable co-owner) was able to squeeze me in. I was all just like, OMG ASDFGKJBNFGH!!!1!!! To say I was excited was an understatement. MY CALIFORNIA DREAMS ARE NOT CRUSHED, YOU GUYS!!
  3. The third and final episode of Prime Asset is live! Check out C.G. Cooper’s latest creation.
  4. Christopher Stocking is putting his first book of the London Darkness series, Infernal Inventions, on sale FOR FREE. Go check it out. What have you got to lose!?
  5. Hypable is going to be at the Oscars tonight! The lucky son of a gun Jimmy Bean is going to knock it out of the park. If you’re interested, just hop onto Hypable.com tonight and check out all our coverage. It’ll knock your socks off.

Did you get any good news this week? Share!

ROW80LogocopyThis week was just…blah.

I didn’t get anything done, except a whole lot of editing on other people’s stories. Productive, I guess, but not for my own personal goals.

I didn’t even blog once this week. Le sigh.

Oh, and my California dreams have been crushed. No San Diego Comic Con for me this year. *lip quiver*

Main Goals

  1. Write or edit every day. 0/7 Writing? What’s writing? Do I even remember what my story is about at this point?
  2. Read every day. 1/7 Still reading Beautiful Creatures, but I haven’t picked it up since Tuesday.
  3. Exercise twice a week. 1/2 After feeling like someone took a baseball bat to my legs last week, I finally got around to exercising…once.

Bonus Goals

  1. Rewrite chapter 1 of L1. Nope.
  2. Keep writing W2. Nope.
  3. Update my contests doc. Nope.

List of Awesome

I really wanted to forgo even putting up a list of awesome this week, but that’s not how I roll. Seeing as this post is already pretty depressing to look at, I figured I should try to do something to infuse it with my usual positivity.

  1. Next week I’m travelling to Philly to meet up with a couple of my fellow Hypable staffers. We’re going to see a pre-screening of The Host and go to a book signing with Stephenie Meyer. The two male leads will also be there to sign posters.
  2. I’ve been podcasting like crazy. Last night we talked about none other than Firefly. Yeah, epic awesomeness coming to Hypable soon.
  3. One of my friends picked up a copy of Forest of the Forsaken after I recommended it, and she liked it a lot! So don’t just take my word for it. ;) (And this week I promise I’ll do up the post about it I said I would do last week.)

How do you pick yourself back up after a week of getting absolutely nothing done?

ROW80LogocopyThis week was just another one of those weeks where I had to put the stuff I want to do on the backburner in order to get the stuff I NEED to do done. Productivity was slow on some fronts, but I managed to keep up on others.

Main Goals

  1. Write or edit every day. 2/7 Not too happy with this, but by the time I got everything else done, I was ready to collapse into bed. Hopefully next week will be better for writing. I’m closing in on the final section of the book – I estimate I have about 10-15K words left – so hopefully I’ll be finishing this project up soon.
  2. Read every day. 5/7 I didn’t read every day this week, but I got A LOT of reading done regardless. I’m still reading Beautiful Creatures, but I had to put it on hold so I could jump into The Darkest Minds in order to record a podcast for Hypable. I ended up getting it done in about four days – whew! It was really good, and I’ll link to the podcast when it goes live, if you guys are interested in our review of it.
  3. Exercise twice a week. 3/2 I’ve been watching a lot of awesome music videos with some killer dance moves in them lately, so I’ve been all pumped to play my Just Dance games. Only, come Friday I was knocked back on my butt with…something. I’m not sure what it was, but my legs felt like someone ran them over with a truck. Feeling much better now though!

Bonus Goals

  1. Rewrite chapter 1 of L1. I didn’t even get a chance to open this document this week, even though I’ve been itching to dive back into it. I hope I can get around to it this week.
  2. Keep writing W2. Going well!
  3. Update my contests doc. Nope. :(

List of Awesome

  1. I wrote a really fun column for Hypable for National Love Your Robot Day (February 7) about my favorite and most loveable robots. Check it out!
  2. As mentioned up above, Hypable is starting up a book podcast. There are five of us on there, and it’s such a fun crew. Really great opinions and discussion, and a lot of silliness and laughter. I hope you guys tune in when we start recording regularly!
  3. Remember last week when I told you I had an awesome book come across my desk for me to edit? It’s live on Amazon now! It’s called Forest of the Foresaken. It’s an amazing read, so please check out the link. You can see my review of it there, too. I’m also going to throw up a post about it on Wednesday, trying to explain in more detail why I think it’s worth your time. So check back!
  4. One of the authors I edit for has some fun zombie stuff in the works. More on that later, but if you want to check it out right away, go visit his Affliction Z Facebook page!
  5. Hypable hit 20,000 published articles this week! And I’ve already written over 100! It’s not a lot in comparison, but considering I was initially brought on as a copyeditor, I’m quite proud of that number. :)

Do you guys usually give self-pubs a chance, or do you steer clear of them?

ROW80LogocopyHappy February! Can’t believe January is over already, but it’s nice to look back and see how well we all did in the first month of the first round of ROW80 for 2013. Here’s to hoping February is even better than that!

Main Goals

  1. Write or edit every day. 7/7 I’m feeling much better now that I’m back on track with this goal. I wrote all seven days and actually managed to get in 5 days of editing as well. I finally feel like I’m moving forward with L1, and I just got over a major hurdle in W2. I’m about halfway done now, and I think the rest of the story is going to be much easier to write than the first half. Exciting!
  2. Read every day. 7/7 I finished Divergent and LOVED it. I’m onto Beautiful Creatures now, and I’m enjoying that quite a bit too. I’ve heard some mixed reviews about it, but if it keeps going the way it is, I think I’ll end up liking it. I’m only about 150 pages into it right now, though.
  3. Exercise twice a week. 2/2 I barely squeezed this goal in this week, but I did get it done. I just didn’t feel like exercising, blah. But when I did finally just go and do it, it felt good!

Bonus Goals

  1. Finish edits on chapters five and six of L1. I’m scraping this goal because, guess what? I’m starting over! Well, not completely. But I decided to rewrite some of the mythology of the story. It was too generic, too mainstream. I wanted to do something a bit more unique, and I came up with a cool idea that actually fits perfectly in with the rest of the story. I finished up my spreadsheet that’ll help me to see the different plot points and conflicts in each chapter. Now that’s done, I’m going through each chapter and rearranging information to reflect this new version. So, the next goal is to rewrite chapter 1 of L1. Luckily these won’t be complete rewrites, and some chapters won’t even have to be touched. I just need to make sure all the details line up.
  2. Keep writing W2. Still working on this, and it’s going great! I wrote an outline for the story (which is a first), and I know exactly where I’m going and how I’m getting there. Now it’s just a matter of finding time to sit down and do the writing.
  3. Update my contests doc. Nope. :(

List of Awesome

  1. I’m seeing Warm Bodies today! Yay, zombies!!!
  2. I worked on a new column for Hypable that will go up on Thursday. I just need to finish formatting it, and then it’ll be done. It’s super cute!
  3. I’m a freelance copyeditor in my spare time (ha!), and I tend to get a whole mix of stuff to edit. Most of the time it’s…not so good. But an AMAZING book came across my desk this week, and WHOA. I totally got sucked into it. I’m only halfway done, but I can’t wait to finish it. That’s such a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of the things I’m used to getting.

What kind of hobbies do you guys have other than writing?

ROW80LogocopyAh, well. I tried.

Life got in the way this week, big time. I’ve been getting slammed with copyediting gigs, which is both a blessing and a right pain in the butt. But I’m not complaining. No, definitely not complaining.

Okay. Maybe I’m complaining.

But just a little! I’ve been super busy with it, which means I’ve had no time to write. That’s the only thing I’m complaining about. But I did get some words in this week, and that’s definitely better than nothing.

On to the breakdown…

Main Goals

  1. Write or edit every day. 4/7 I didn’t get in any editing, and I didn’t get much writing in either. Hopefully next week is a lot calmer and I’m able to focus on that again.
  2. Read every day. 1/7 Despite the fact that I’m loving Divergent right now, I only picked it up once this week. Usually by the time I’m about to fall into bed, I fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow!
  3. Exercise twice a week. 3/2 I’m still doing great with this goal, and having fun with it too. I’m actually looking forward to exercising again!

Bonus Goals

  1. Finish edits on chapters five and six of L1. Nope.
  2. Keep writing W2. I had too many ideas to just go back and edit W1 even though it was a mess, so I decided to just keep writing in W2 while they were fresh in my mind. I still have to come up with a main plot line, but I’ve got the beginning all figured out. It’s going well so far, and I’m almost up to the point where I need to figure out what the major conflict of the story is. That would be an important thing to know, wouldn’t it? ;)
  3. Update my contests doc. Nope.

List of Awesome

  1. I’m slowly trying to transition myself into working at home more and more often. I’m extremely lucky that I have a very understanding boss who is willing to allow me to do this so I can have more flexible hours. We’re still working out the details, but I’m hoping this will allow me to meet my deadlines a bit faster when I have a lot of them, like I did this week.
  2. This is something cool that I’ve never had happen to me before. This article on Examiner.com (a site that is about 10x bigger than us) referenced a news piece I wrote about Teen Wolf for Hypable, and actually quoted something I said about one of the characters! I may have done a happy dance when I saw it…
  3. C.G. Cooper’s second episode of the third book, Prime Asset, in the Corps Justice series is now live!
  4. Warm Bodies hits theatres on FRIDAY. I’m going to see it next weekend, and I am so excited!!

Points and Words

Anyone else going to see Warm Bodies when it comes out?

ROW80LogocopyHey, guys! I had a super week. Not only did I meet all of my main goals, but I also overachieved on exercising (ALWAYS  a plus) and finished the first step on a MAJOR project.

*dances*

Main Goals

  1. Write or edit every day. 7/7 I wrote each day and edited on three of the days as well. More on the big goal accomplished down below.
  2. Read every day. 7/7 Divergent is so, so, SO good. I just wish I had more time to read it. Reading a chapter a night is agonizingly slow. I wish the third book was out already too. Having to wait for it once I finish Insurgent is going to be brutal.
  3. Exercise twice a week. 4/2 Four times!? I must be crazy. Or I’m just addicted to Just Dance 4. I’m going to venture a guess that it’s the latter. I also dropped two pounds from last week, which is, like, WHOA. But, hey. I’m not complaining.

Bonus Goals

  1. Finish edits on chapters five and six of L1. It’s a no go on this. I’m doing up a spreadsheet right now to help me figure out what needs to be changed and what parts are lacking. So actual edits are on hold until that’s done. Then I’ve decided – against my better judgment – that I’m going to rewrite a few of the major plots. I just…didn’t like them. Basically, this was me:
  2. Continue writing W1. THIS IS DONE. You guys, I FINISHED IT. *flails* It’s 34.5K words long and it’s…pretty terrible. It’s going to need an overhaul. I’m talking chainsaw, hazmat suits, and maybe some dynamite. But I don’t care. The words are on the screen. The plot is down. It just needs some fine tuning, and then it will be GOLDEN. I’m really excited about this one. New goal is to keep writing W2. (More on that at the next check-in.)
  3. Update my contests doc. I didn’t quite to this yet. I was too busy. Oops. *hides*

List of Awesome

  1. DID I MENTION THAT I FINISHED WRITING W1???
  2. I attended a WANA webinar titled Agent Secrets, and it was awesome! I learned a lot, and I think I’m finally getting a game plan in my head for what I want to do. Yeahhh!
  3. Episode 14 of Onceable is LIVE! We discuss Once Upon a Time’s “The Outsider” in our episode titled “Belle and Hook.”
  4. Episode 9 of Not Another Teen Wolf Podcast is also live! We talk about the Teen Wolf webisode series Search for a Cure on our episode titled “Webisodalicious.” (Which I seriously have trouble pronouncing.)
  5. I finished a very big article for Hypable. It’s about Harry Potter, and I’m super proud of it. Hopefully it’ll go live next week some time so I can share it with you.
  6. My friend’s fiancee’s band (Echo & Drake) is up for a chance to play at the Grammy’s! You can vote for them here (which I would really appreciate – as would they). I also scored them an interview with Hypable. Yay for sharing the love!
  7. I broke 5K words on Wednesday. Holy cow!!
  8. Added three more chapters to my spreadsheet for L1.

Points and Words

This week I wrote:

What book are you currently reading? Any I absolutely need to add to my (gigantic) TBR list?

ROW80LogocopyGood morning, ROWers! How are you guys today? I’m FAB, actually. Had a super strong week and I’m really excited for this round. I’m trying to take it easy – not overstretching myself, but making sure I’m still getting a lot done. Just want to see what happens when I make my goals simple and easy to obtain. So far it’s working out pretty well!

Main Goals

  1. Write or edit every day. 7/7 I wrote all seven days, and actually edited on two of them as well. The editing is…not going well. I’m feeling a strong need to rewrite some major points in the story and, well, that’s giving me the jitters. I kind of don’t even want to open my document right now. The writing is going well, as I’m over 25K words into this new story I’m putting together. The problem is that it’s a bit of a free-write. The writing is fairly atrocious (and that’s probably putting it mildly), though I’m still having fun with it. It’s going to need a major overhaul once I’m done, but finishing it is going to be a huge accomplishment. Even if it needs a rewrite, at least I’ll be able to highlight the parts that work and the parts that don’t.
  2. Read every day. 7/7 I’ve been trying to do at least a chapter a night, which can be hard when I don’t fall into bed until 11 and have to get up at 6:30. (I’m one of those people that needs an obscene amount of sleep to feel refreshed.) For the most part I did do a chapter a night, and it’s been nice to really get into a book again. I’m reading Divergent, and I’m absolutely in love with it so far. The story is good, and the writing is really great. I’m definitely mentally taking notes from this one!
  3. Exercise twice a week. 3/2 That’s no mistake – I actually did exercise three times this week! I’ve been getting into Just Dance 4 a lot more lately, and dug out the DVD for Hip Hop Abs. Regular workouts just don’t work for me, but give me some music and a few dance steps, and I get pumped! It’s nice to enjoy exercising again, and hopefully this DVD will give me more than just the cardio workout JD4 does. My legs are super sore today, so I think it’s working! I’m also working on getting the junk food out of the house and getting some good fruits and veggies in the fridge. My weight went up again, and my pants feel tighter, which is never a good sign. Here’s to taking this more seriously again!

Bonus Goals

  1. Finish edits on chapters five and six of L1. I’ve been working on chapter 5 this past week, but as I said above, I’m sort of avoiding it now. I need to just sit down and think out what I want to change and what needs to change for the sake of the story.
  2. Continue writing W1. This is going well! As I said, I’m over 25K words on this right now. I’ve been writing nearly 1,000+ words a day, which has been very helpful in moving the story along. I’m closing in on the last act of the story, and I suspect it’ll probably end somewhere around the 30-35K mark. Once I do a rewrite of this, I expect it to expand dramatically, but I’m happy with this size for now.
  3. Update my contests doc. This desperately needs to be done, and I really want to make sure I do it before next week’s check-in. Someone hold me to it!

List of Awesome

  1. After some technical difficulties with our last episode (which we didn’t end up releasing, that’s how bad it was), we recorded episode #13 of Onceable, talking about Once Upon a Time’s “The Cricket Game” episode. Fun stuff!
  2. Went shopping using my gift cards from Christmas and got a whole bunch of stuff! New purse (really needed that), more books (really didn’t need those), and another movie (really, really didn’t need that – but it was Inception and it was only $4!)
  3. Got Google Verified, which means that if you look up an article that I’ve written for Hypable, my picture will (sometimes?) appear next to it! Very cool!! Try this one to check it out. (You may have to log out of your Google account if it doesn’t show up. I know I can’t see my own if I’m logged in – weird!)
  4. One of my best friends, Nicole, started her very own blog! She writes a lot of poetry and is a total music nerd. Go follow her! I’ve known this girl for practically my whole life. I promise she’s awesome. :)

Points and Words

Okay, new points system: Each of my main goals gets FIVE POINTS. Bonus goals get TEN POINTS if they’re completed. The whole one point thing last round wasn’t really worth it, since they were usually bigger goals. So, this week I’ve gotten:

  • Week 1 – 95 points

Great start to the round!!

This week I wrote:

  • Week 1 – 8,284 words

(Whooo!)

That brings my total words for the year up to: 17,107 words written since January 1, 2013

What’s on YOUR List of Awesome this week? How are your writing goals going? Do you like to keep track of your words, or would you rather just pay attention to the quality and not worry about the quantity?

ROW80LogocopyLast year was the first year I did ROW80, and I was lucky enough to pick it up right in January and get to do all four rounds. It was definitely an eye-opening experience, and I learned a lot about what works for me and how far I can push myself.

This year I’m taking everything I learned into consideration and using it to help fuel my goals for 2013.

This past week I’ve been experimenting with some goals that I want to accomplish and trying to focus on what is really important to me as a writer. I got away from writing recently, and I need to bring that to the forefront again. That is why I’m here after all.

So, my main goals are going to be to write and read every day, as they were in the last round. Except I’m going to force myself to do both everyday – at least a paragraph. A sentence even, if that’s all I can do. But I know that once I start, it’s hard to stop. So if I can just start, I’ll get over that hump and be able to get a bunch of words down on paper.

I’m also going to start keeping track of my word count each day – no particular goals here, but just to look at how I’m doing overall. It really helped in my first round, and it’d be nice to see if I can keep up a pretty solid word count from round to round.

I’m also going to start exercising more consistently. Nothing crazy like I did a few rounds ago, just twice a week. I want to ease myself back into it. Make it fun again. I’ve already exercised several times this week just for the heck of it, which is a great feeling. It’s nice to exercise because I want to, not because I feel like I have to. I’m also going to start eating better. I need to get rid of the junk food in the house and focus on healthier foods. That’ll help just as much as trying to exercise more often.

I’d also like to work on some major projects this round. I want to finish up edits on L1 and finish writing W1. I’ve got some solid plans for both, and I know what I want to do once I get past both of those stages, so I just need to sit down and do it.

I’m going to keep the structure I had last round, because that helped tremendously. I like the idea of assigning points to everything because it helps me see how I do from week to week. I think I’m going to change up how much everything is worth, but I’ll figure that out when I do my first check in next week.

And, as always, I’m going to keep the List of Awesome. It makes for a good pick-me-up at the end of each check-in, especially when I don’t do so hot on my goals. Plus, it’s a fun way to pass along what I’ve been up to and brag about other people!

Happy ROWing everyone! Let’s make this round an awesome round!

P.S. For this week, I’ve edited once, written four times (for a total of 8,823 words), and exercised three times. Not a bad start!
